Day by Day in Harrogate 2008  (written by pupils)

24.07.2008

The bus journey was very long but funny. Then we went onto the ferry. On the ferry it was good but unfortunately some pupils got a little bit seasick.

The next morning we had breakfast on the ferry. It was 8 o'clock when we left the ferry. Two buses drove us to Ashville College in Harrogate. We arrived at Ashville College at half past ten. Then we were shown around the school.

Today we had our first lessons. We were divided into five classes and the lessons are very funny. With lessons like this, learning is great! In the afternoon we could go to town or do some sports. In the evening we will have our "games evening". That will be good fun!

Today we went to Ripley Castle. We were divided into two groups. Then the tour guides told us something about a lot of rooms and their stories within the castle. We saw a lot of pictures of the family who have lived in the castle for 700 years. It's still the same family today! The hiding place for Catholic priests was very interesting, because you weren't allowed to be a Catholic in those times. You had to be a Protestant in England. If they caught you, you were killed. We didn't see a ghost but it was interesting nevertheless. Then we visited two Yorkshire villages. There, we could go shopping, drink something in a café or visit a car boot sale. It was a great daytrip!

Today was a "normal" day. We had lessons, and could go into town or stay at the school. In the evening we could visit a real English Pub, where we had a drink. And the tennis tournament started.

Today we had lessons and in the afternoon we could go swimming, watch TV or go into town. The tennis tournament continued today, too. In the evening we could watch a film called "8 Miles".

The lessons were good and we learnt a lot.  In the afternoon we could play football or do other kinds of sports.  Rachael started her own singing group with us.  That's a lot of fun.  In the evening there was a film called "Mr Bean on Holiday".

Today it was raining cats and dogs.  Although the weather was bad we had a lot of fun.  There were a lot of games and we could watch two films "Mission Impossible 3" and "Meet the Parents" so it was a good day.

Yesterday it was raining so the pub visit happened today instead and we could also watch the film "Bruce Almighty" and we could play rounders.  Rounders is a funny game which you play in two teams.  You have to hit a ball with something like a baseball bat.  The other team has to catch the ball while you run once round the pitch.  This gives you a point.  The team with the most points wins.

Today there was the pool tournament. After this we had our first karaoke evening. It was great fun. We sang a lot of famous songs together and danced with Sara and Debbie to songs like YMCA. We hope that the next karaoke evening will be as great as this one.

There were no lessons today! It was our free day. And could sleep and relax. But of course you could do something else if you wanted to. There was a pirate game, a treasure hunt in Harrogate and a scavenger hunt. You could go to the gym, go swimming or play squah. It was a great relaxing day.

Today there were lessons and the normal activities in the afternoon. In the evening another pub visit was offered to the Black Swan. The tennis doubles tournament was postponed because of the weather.

The lessons were great today. We would like to introduce the teachers today. Sara, the grammar teacher, Rachel does singing and acting with us, Sarah teaches us how to use grammar and Laurence and Debbie who do project work and practise speaking English with us. All the teachers are great! But the teachers don't only teach us. The play games with us, watch filmes and are always there for us.

Today we had a double birthday! Tobias und Larissa, the twins, turned 15! But they had to go to lessons nevertheless. At lunch we sang "Happy Birthday" and they got a lot of presents. There were a few ill people, who could watch a film or something like that. The Vesters had to spend a lot of time with the "ill ones".

We had a beautiful day-trip to Leeds today. First we visited the Armoury Museum. We were allowed to try on old armour and dresses. Then we could look around the museum a bit. After this we looked at a falconery show with interesting birds. Then we could go shopping in Leeds. It was really a great day-trip!

Today we the topic with Rachael was hoe to do presentations. It was really funny, because there were really funny topics such as "Mr Vester". We learned a lot about leopards, Mary Stuart or London. In the evening we watched the film "Catch me if you can". It's the story about a man who cheats the state and does serveral different jobs.

Today we had our last lessons, but it was good nevertheless. With Debbie we listened to songs of her favourite band "MacFly". There we had to fill in a gap text about the songs "It's all about you" and "That girl with 5 colours in her hair". Debbie told us that she has bought some tickets for a concert of "MacFly".

Last day, last day-trip. Today we went to York. After a short city tour with the teachers we could visit the Minster, the Castle Museum, the Railway Museum or have free time. In the afternoon we drove to the Designer Outlets. There were a lot of shops like Armani, Lacoste and Adidas. It was a very nice day-trip. In the evening we had our second karaoke evening and the talent show. The last evening was very good!

After breakfast we had to pack our suitcases and leave Ashville College. We said Goodbye to the teachers because only Sara is going back to Germany with us. Then we drove to the port and went onto the ferry where we had dinner.

We had breakfast on the ferrry and then we arrived in Rotterdam. Now we're sitting on the bus to Pforzheim and waiting to see our parents. The holidays were great!
